Apple says software fix is coming for iPhone 18 Pro Face ID reboot issue

Apple told 9to5Mac a fix is in the works and should arrive early next week. The outlet reproduced a freeze and reboot after a failed Face ID attempt. Apple has not identified a version number or detailed root cause.

Some iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max users have reported their phones freezing and restarting after a failed Face ID attempt. 9to5Mac reproduced the problem on an iPhone 18 Pro by obscuring a face while trying to open the Passwords app. It reported that the device stopped responding to touch, rebooted seconds later and recorded a panic log in iPhone Analytics.

Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac on Sept. 23 that a software update addressing the problem is in the works and should be available early next week. GSMArena separately reported a planned firmware fix for the following week. The update has not been released yet. Neither report names a specific iOS version for the fix.

The reports do not establish the exact software component at fault or a link to MagSafe temperature handling. They also do not quantify how many phones are affected. 9to5Mac says some owners tried exchanging phones, but its reproduced case points toward waiting for the software fix rather than assuming every handset needs replacement.
