  • Anthropic’s October 6 release adds a Workspace sidebar and separate file-editing connectors. Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans qualify, but Google Marketplace permissions and organization controls still apply.

Anthropic announced on October 6 that Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans. The add-on puts a sidebar in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, while separate beta connectors let users create and edit Google files from Claude.

The sidebar can read the open file, use selected text, cells or slides as context, and make changes in place. Anthropic describes document rewrites, spreadsheet formulas and charts, and slides built from existing deck layouts and themes. These are vendor-described capabilities; we did not independently test them.

The default mode is Ask before edits: Claude presents an approval card and waits before changing the file. Accept all edits applies changes without those stops. The Help Center says Google records edits under the user’s name and shows them in version history, making review important even when a change looks plausible.

Eligibility includes Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, plus a Google account permitted to install Marketplace apps. A paid Claude subscription does not override an administrator’s app restrictions. Admins can deploy the add-on for a domain or selected groups.

The add-on and connectors are related but distinct routes. One opens Claude inside an existing Google file; the other starts in Claude to create or edit files. Anthropic says access follows existing Google sharing permissions, and Team or Enterprise owners must enable the relevant connectors first.

The sidebar’s default file context is the open document, sheet or deck, plus selected material. It should not be mistaken for automatic access to all Drive files, email or calendar content. Additional connected sources require their own setup and permissions.

This remains a beta. Organizations should check installation policy, edit-review mode and data controls before enabling it for sensitive work.
