Google adds more source links to AI Search, with official-site display still in testing

Google announced October 15 changes to inline links, news carousels and creator context. Several parts are tests or staged rollouts, not a promise of traffic for publishers.

Key points

  • Google announced October 15 changes to inline links, news carousels and creator context. Several parts are tests or staged rollouts, not a promise of traffic for publishers.

Google announced changes to AI Mode and AI Overviews on October 15 intended to make links and source context easier to find. The update covers inline links, official websites, timely reporting and creator information rather than a new AI model release.

The company says it has increased the presence of links embedded in words or phrases in AI responses. It is also launching changes designed to put those links higher in responses more often. These are descriptions of presentation changes, not independently measured referral gains.

Google will test a dedicated section near the top of a response for official pages relevant to a task, with context explaining why each link is useful. That feature remains a test in the announcement; it should not be treated as a universal display on every search.

Prominent carousels for timely articles are beginning to reach additional locations and languages globally. Google says the carousels can highlight a user's Preferred Sources. The post does not give a complete market-by-market rollout timetable.

The update also describes prominent related-article links and tests of clickable creator and publisher names on video results in AI Mode. Those names lead to Search profiles, providing context about the creator's other work.

What to watch: the mix of launched changes, tests and staged rollouts means users may see different layouts. Publishers should check actual link placement and referrals rather than read the announcement as a guarantee of inclusion, ranking or audience growth.
