Google DeepMind announced on October 7, 2026 that it is opening SynthID Detector to everyone globally in English. The tool had previously been available in an early version for media professionals.
Google says users can check whether an image, video or audio file was made with AI from Google or its partners. The announcement lists OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple coming “soon.” It does not give an Apple support date or name specific Apple Intelligence features that will be covered.
SynthID uses imperceptible watermarks inserted into generated media. Detector support should therefore not be mistaken for proof that it can identify every AI-generated file, including content from systems that do not embed a compatible watermark. The announcement describes supported source ecosystems, not universal detection.
Google says it has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos and 240,000 years of audio content since SynthID launched in 2023. These are the vendor's cumulative scale claims, not a published accuracy rate or an independent evaluation conducted by Next Tech Signal.
The release also says existing verification features in Search, the Gemini app and Chrome handle more than 1 million requests daily. That figure describes those verification features, not daily users of the newly expanded Detector.
For Apple users, the current distinction is between the globally available English-language tool and future Apple compatibility. We have not treated “soon” as a dated rollout or claimed that all Apple-generated images already carry supported watermarks.
