Replit is no longer working with Anthropic, CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday, October 15. The AI coding platform has made OpenAI's ChatGPT models the default for Replit Agent, with Masad citing cost among the reasons. Replit announced its OpenAI partnership in August, but until now there was no public indication the Anthropic relationship had ended.

After the session, Masad clarified that Anthropic has not been completely cut out: customers can still select Claude and other supported models on the platform. The default switch still matters commercially, since most customers stick with the default rather than choosing a model themselves, so the change could significantly reduce Replit's spend with Anthropic.

Before the OpenAI deal, Replit relied on Anthropic's Claude models to run its platform, a partnership credited with helping grow Replit's revenue significantly; Masad said Replit had until recently been a top-five Anthropic customer. As recently as late September, a Replit blog post cited Claude Fable 5 and Claude Fable 5.1 as models running in Replit Agent's production environment, and a Replit product employee promoted the flagship Opus 5.5 on X around the same time.

The onstage characterization was disputed: one person familiar with the Anthropic-Replit partnership, speaking anonymously, said the partnership was still in place. Masad's own framing leaves room for that: "Replit remains model agnostic," he told TechCrunch. "Our users can choose Anthropic's Claude or other supported models... OpenAI is now our preferred partner for powering Replit Agent, based on performance, economics, and the strength of our partnership."

Backstage, Masad also said he expects more than half of Replit's revenue to come from enterprise and government customers in 2027.

For developers on Replit, nothing breaks: Claude stays available as a non-default option. The bigger signal is for the model market - a high-volume AI coding customer moving its default, and most of its inference spend, from Anthropic to OpenAI. This account is based on TechCrunch's reporting from Disrupt; the underlying partnership terms were not disclosed.
