MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026 that clicking and holding an app icon in the Dock in the third macOS 27.2 developer beta makes the icon slightly larger. The publication compares the animation with the response to a long press in iOS and iPadOS.
The animation is a software observation reported by MacRumors, not an Apple announcement of new hardware. MacRumors links it to rumors of a future touch-enabled OLED MacBook. We did not independently inspect the beta binaries or reproduce the gesture.
An October 5 MacRumors report describes touch-specific gesture references in Safari, Notes, Photos and Quick Look. That report also supplies an important alternative explanation: the code can be applicable to Sidecar, which lets an iPad serve as a Mac display. It explicitly says the code is not a clear indication of a new Mac.
The two reports therefore support a narrower conclusion than hardware confirmation. There are reported touch-oriented software changes, but their intended use remains uncertain. Claims about a MacBook Ultra name, final chips, cellular support and launch timing remain rumors, not verified product specifications.
Apple has not announced a touchscreen Mac in these sources. Readers should not treat a beta animation as a launch promise.
