Key points

  • WebKit's October 8 release notes list fixes across accessibility, CSS, rendering and other browser components. This is a developer test browser, not a new production Safari release.

WebKit published Safari Technology Preview 254 release notes on October 8, 2026. The notes say the download is available for macOS Golden Gate and macOS Tahoe and covers WebKit changes between revisions 321068 and 322634.

The release lists accessibility fixes, including VoiceOver behavior for date, time and color inputs and announcements of focused ARIA menu items. It also describes fixes for animation visibility and freezing. These are documented engineering changes, not an independent usability test by this publication.

CSS changes include grid sizing and relayout work, table-cell placement and line-clamp behavior. The notes identify particular rendering cases; they do not promise every website will become faster or that every layout issue is fixed.

Apple describes Safari Technology Preview as a way to test upcoming web technologies and experiment with websites and extensions. It should not be confused with a new production Safari version or a release of the macOS operating system itself.

Users who already have Safari Technology Preview installed can update it through System Settings, General, Software Update, according to WebKit. The exact installation requirements should be checked on Apple's current developer resources page. This brief does not link the release to an unannounced Mac launch or a confirmed touchscreen roadmap.
